  • Up the Hill and Away to School. Winter Morning in Halland, Sweden.

#dmjxphoto #dmjx #collaboration #sweden #syria #children #refugees

I’m Alexandra Hootnick @alliehoot and this week I’ll be sharing images and text from my @dmjx diploma project, Laya Al-Khazam’s Adventures in Sweden.

Last fall I met Laya and her family in a small town in southern Sweden, where they were granted asylum after fleeing Syria. Laya is nine years old, her favorite colors are pink and magenta and her favorite things to do are drawing and playing.

The project, a children’s book, is a product of a several week collaboration with Laya last fall, during which we used a combination of her drawings and my photographs to create a sense of the physical, mental and emotional space of a child refugee.
  • Come follow along with us @dmjxphoto this week where I'll be posting images from the children’s book collaboration between myself and the wonderful Laya Al-Khazam.

  • Visit with Uncle Eyad. Halland, Sweden.

Laya's parents had heard about Sweden before. The country was the home of a famous band called ABBA, which many people listened to in Syria. They had also heard that people in Sweden were nice to refugees from Syria.
One of Laya’s uncles, Uncle Eyad, had already left for Sweden, and he encouraged their family to meet him there.

  • This is Alex inside Western Kentucky University's mascot Big Red backstage after performing at Mascot Nationals at Daytona Beach on April 9, 2016. An absolutely wonderful mascot whose character is defined as "larger than life". Big Red isn't a gender, it's an it. But even though it's not a he or she people keep asking what it is. "In today's society people keep asking what gender are you. Even though I know they were talking about Big Red I feel like they were talking about me too. Like what gender are you" Alex says. #hesheit while I was there I did a lot of snapchats. You can follow me there as @photogarcia.
