Pipilotti Rist: Jordlys og pingpong med solen / Earth Lights and Ping-Pong with the Sun

Schweiziske Pipilotti Rist (f. 1962) er en verdenskendt samtidskunstner og pioner indenfor videokunst, der i mere end 35 år har haft en omfattende, international udstillingspraksis og værker repræsenteret i museumssamlinger verden over. Frygtløst bidrager hun fortsat som kunstner til at udvide reglerne og grænserne for levende videoindhold, og hvordan dette kan formidles gennem innovativ videoteknologi.

Jordlys og pingpong med solen er Pipilotti Rists hidtil største stedsspecifikke videoinstallation. Med udgangspunkt i uddannelsernes fokus på formidling og demokrati, har Rist skabt et sanseligt univers bestående af levende billeder og farverige former, der oplyser bygningens arkitektur både indefra og til dels udefra. Rist udvider begrebet for historiefortælling, når hun omslutter hverdagens aktører med aktive projiceringerne, der bevæger sig i slowmotion henover kroppe, planter, møbler og arkitektur, og gør det forbipasserende til medskabere af hendes kunstværk.

Dialog med universet

Installationen består af fire koordinerede videoprojektioner installeret i fire forskellige områder i stueplan, multifarvede vintage gardiner og en stor diskokugle i kantinen. Videomaterialet forstørrer i følge Pipilotti Rist: ‘.. ganske små detaljer fra mine omgivelser, som derved får deres eget liv, og der er indføjet lag med ægte og kunstige stjerner og funklende lys, der minder om de små eksplosioner, der foregår i hjernens synapser. Indholdet portrætterer indre verdener hinsides huden.’

Tre ud af de i alt fire projiceringer peger nedad og rammer jorden – heraf den ene del af titlen; Jordlys. Pipilotti Rist forklarer, hvordan lyset og videoen, der rammer jorden synes at gløde, som hvis lysprojiceringerne opstod af selveste jordens indre kerne og brød igennem jordskorpen. Hermed minder kunstneren os om naturen, og at vi lever på en gigantisk lavakugle. Jordlysene kan således ses som jordens blinkende vener af lys, som skinner ud gennem verdens ‘hud’ og danner små furer af ild, der varmer og kærtegner menneskene, og opfordrer os til at samles omkring et ‘jordligt’ urbant elektronisk/digitalt bål.

Den fjerde projektion skyder opad og ind i arkitekturen op mod trappen og ovenlysvinduerne. Derfor har denne ene projektion lagt navn til den anden del af titlen; pingpong med solen. Projektionerne og det digitale lys kan ikke ‘over-stråle' solen, men kun skinne når solen er væk, derfor er kunstværket i konstant dialog med solen hele året rundt og lyser som en alternativ sol i de mørke timer. Derfor har Pipilotti Rist også døbt lysene med betegnelsen vidunderlamper, der bringer lys, liv og inspiration i ydretimerne. Videoinstallationen er dermed koreograferet efter årstid og tidspunkt på dagen, herunder tidspunkterne for solopgang og solnedgang.

Det samlede værk er realiseret med støtte fra Ny Carlsbergfondet, Det Obelske Familiefond, Salling Fondene, FEAS, Spar Nord Fonden, Beckett-Fonden og Statens Kunstfond. Kunstværket er kurateret af Creator Projects og udviklet i samarbejde med designkontoret Kollision samt Arkitema Architects, der har tegnet DMJX’ campusbygning og medvirket til arkitektonisk og teknisk integration. Kunstinstallationen blev indviet 2. september 2020.

Earth Lights and ping-pong with the Sun

Pipilotti Rist (b.1962), from Switzerland, is a world-renowned contemporary artist and pioneer of video art. Her comprehensive international exhibition activities span more than thirty-five years and her works are represented in museum collections across the world. With her sustained artistic contribution, she continues undauntedly to expand the rules and limits for animated video content and how this can be presented through innovative video technology.

Earth Lights and Ping-Pong with the Sun is Pipilotti Rist’s largest site-specific video installation to date. Revolving around the communicative and democratic elements shared by the education programmes, Rist has created a sensory universe comprising animated images and colourful shapes, illuminating the architecture of the building from the inside and, in part, from the outside. Rist extends the storytelling concept when she envelops people going about their everyday business with active projections moving in slow motion across bodies, plants, furniture, and architecture, involving passers-by as co-creators of her artwork.

Dialogue with the universe

The installation comprises four coordinated video projections installed in four different areas at ground-floor level, multi-coloured vintage curtains, and a large disco ball in the canteen. According to Pipilotti Rist, the video material enlarges ‘... minute details from my surroundings which, in this way, come to life with added layers of real and artificial stars and sparkling light resembling the small explosions occurring in the cerebral synapses. The content depicts inner worlds beyond the skin.’

Three of a total of four projections point downwards and strike the earth – hence the Earth Lights part of the title. Pipilotti Rist explains how the lights and the video striking the earth seem to glow as if emerging from the very core of the earth, breaking through its crust. Thus, the artist seeks to remind us of nature and the fact that we are living on a giant ball of lava. The earth lights can thus be interpreted as the earth’s pulsating veins of light shining out through the ‘skin’ of the world and forming small grooves of light that warm and caress us human beings, encouraging us to gather around an ‘earthly’ urban electronic/digital bonfire.

The fourth projection shoots upwards into the architecture towards the stairs and the skylights. This projection, therefore, forms the second part of the title: Ping-Pong with the Sun. The projections and the digital light cannot ‘outshine’ the sun, but can only shine when the sun is absent, thus the artwork conducts a constant year-round dialogue with the sun, shining as an alternative sun during the dark hours. For this reason, Pipilotti Rist has called the lights lamps of wonder, bringing light, life, and inspiration to the peripheral hours. The video installation is thus choreographed in response to the season and time of day, including the times of sunrise and sunset.

The collective work has been realised with financial support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Det Obelske Familiefond, Salling Fondene, FEAS, Spar Nord Fonden, Beckett-Fonden, and the Danish Arts Foundation. The artwork is curated by Creator Projects and developed in collaboration with the design office, Kollision, and Arkitema Architects, who designed DMJX’ campus building and assisted in architectural and technical integration. The art installation was inaugurated on 2 September 2020.
